Located in the Sainsbury Wing, the critically acclaimed National Dining Rooms is the National Gallery’s fine dining restaurant and bakery.
Serving the very best in modern British food, the National Dining Rooms is committed to supporting small-scale British farmers, growers and cheese-makers wherever possible and uses the finest British ingredients sourced from all over the British Isles.
The National Dining Rooms is open during Gallery hours for lunch and the ultimate afternoon tea, as well as weekend brunch and traditional Sunday lunch. Families are always welcome with a dedicated children’s menu, available seven days a week.
The restaurant’s a la carte menu is unmistakably home-grown and includes starters of roast scallops with Jerusalem artichokes and smoked bacon and main courses such as double chop of Elwy Valley lamb with spelt and rosemary. Desserts might include warm treacle tart with clotted cream; steamed chocolate pudding with custard and rhubarb trifle. Complementing the menu is a strong New and Old World wine list priced between £15 and £50, with many available by the glass.
The bakery is open every day for elevenses, light lunches and drinks. Cake stands are decked with everything from buns, biscuits and fig rolls, to sweet pots of lemon and orange posset, sherry trifle and rhubarb fool. A selection of freshly baked loaves are also available alongside a wide variety of regional British cheeses featuring choices such as the award-winning Sharpham Brie, Cornish Yarg, Dorset Dum and Thomas Hoe Stevenson. Pricing is refreshingly sensible, with a cost for one, three or five cheeses. There is also an impressive bar, artfully dispensing drinks from a 25 strong list of loose-leaf teas, to delicious juices, fruit blends and smoothies. Visitors in a hurry can pop in for a slice of cake and coffee or a delicious pie and discover the great tradition of British baking.
